Title of the project:

DEVELOPING OF THE SCIENTIFIC METHODOLOGY BASIS AND SERVICE PROVIDING OF A USER-FRIENDLY METEOROLOGICAL, CLIMATOLOGICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION SYSTEM

Short title:

METINFO

Summary of the project

The project aims to develop a user friendly intelligent meteorological and climatological information system. Meteorological information are used in all sector of the economy and they are relevant also in environment and water management as well as in civil defence in catastrophic situation. Due to new observing technics like satellite systems, radar observations, lightening detections and automatized near surface stations the available meteorological data increased 4-5 order of magnitude in the last ten years. To handle and analyse the enourmous data require the highest level of computer technics. The most important challenge is preparing and disseminating the proper information for special users coming from a wide range of economical branches. Hungarian Meteorological Service as project coordinator undertakes to build up a data basis organized according to the requirements of the potential users. Participants of the project undertake to form required data and information and to test the results. Targeted sectors are: energy supplyers, hidrology, disaster management, agriculture, environment protection.

The main result of the project will be a new information system which provides all the required information directly to the end-users in electronic way in the field of real time meteorological information, climatological information, weather forecast and warning systems.

All those knowledge accumulated in last decades concerning the effects of weather and climate on different processes in hydrology, agricultural production, energy requirements, environmental effects will be summerized in one system. The end-users can reach the system to load that special information what they need. The planned system will be flexible to build up further connections will be revealed in the future.

The project started in July 2001 and will be end in 2004.
