Title of the project:

Investigation the atmospheric energy resources in Hungary, mapping existing potentials and supporting their use with the help of meteorological measurements and forecasts

Short title:

Wind and Solar Energy in Hungary

Summary of the project:

The main goal of the project is integrating the basis of knowledge and information connected with wind and solar energy in Hungary in order to increase their use and investigation.

In the area of utilising wind and solar energy, the key issue is exploring regions where energy production can be done efficiently. In order to do this we need large amounts of verified data with appropriate spatial and temporal resolution, suitable statistical methods, interpolation procedures and models. Besides we have to be able to create horizontally and in case of wind vertically continuous and highly detailed fields, we also have to posses a user friendly graphical information system as well as appropriate knowledge and methods in practice of selecting places, planning and evaluating.

As a basis of the examination we want to create a homogeneous, quality controlled, digitised wind and sunshine record data base for a ten year period. Relying on this data base we carry out the regional mapping of the possible wind and solar energy resources using statistical methods and modelling.

After finding the places which could be potentially used we accomplish some further local measurements, modelling and effectiveness studies in order to select the most optimal places in terms of utilisation of wind and solar energy.

Using high resolution numerical weather prediction model data, we produce wind and radiation forecasts as an input of the decision making procedures of the energy suppliers and we verify the forecast quality as well. Results gained from the project are on one hand published on the Internet to inform the public, whereas on the other hand they can be displayed in graphical information system

The project started in July 2002 and will be end in 2005.
