abstract

The project intends to satisfy the increasing requirements toward the open systems technologies which need to be designed to operate across organisations and therefore, in a European context, across languages and across cultures. It aims to produce solutions to the problem of multilinguality in the education of professional people who are taking open and distance education courses in GIS.Goals:1.An intelligent software system based on lexicographic structures of languages which provides multilingual entry.2.A ‘knowledge pool’ of educational materials in GIS in a number of languages.3.A programme of education by open and distance methods designed to address the multi-lingual issues in GIS professional development. The ‘concept store’ is based on XML to allow web access to a database. It is based upon extensive multilingual thesauri and metadata systems. The result is an integrated, web-based course.
