SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF POULTRY DIVERSITY IN AGRICULTURAL ECOSYSTEMS

Abstract

Majority of domestic breeds of different poultry species (including chicken, turkey, goose, duck and Guinea fowl) are at risk as they have been exluded from production parallel with the development of poultry industry. Long time gene conservation programmes applied to save them can be successful only if agricultural use of those breeds are developed. Organic (ecological) farming is the most realistic way of sustainable management of threatened poultry breeds, within that however, research has to be done for the utilization of traditional poultry in different agricultural ecosystems (including crop production, soil management, utilization of surface water, plant protection etc.) as well as high/controlled quality production and animal welfare, for the sake of agri-environment protection in different climatic conditions.
